The application process is probably the most in-depth and comprehensive process you have ever encountered. After all, this is not the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts you are volunteering for. It is imperative that both you and the National Guard are right for each other. This a general outline of the process but keep in mind that your individual application may vary depending on the program you are enlisting for.
Speak with a recruiter (SSG Perez)
Decide that the Virginia National Guard is for you
Complete the Security Questionare, which includes listing everywhere you have lived, worked, and went to school for the past 10 years, also references, family members, and a much more
Gather your original documents verifying your birth, citizenship, education, marital status, etc.
Bring Questionare and Documents to SSG Perez so your application can be constructed.
Sign the documents in your application packet. (This is not a contract)
Take the ASVAB (right now a minimum AFQT score of 50 is needed to enlist) (If you need to study I can tell you about a few resources)
Take the physical. You have to see the doctors to ensure you are in good physical health. If you are unsure as to whether you will qualify medically, just ask me.
Sign your contract, which will commit you to whatever programs and incentives you agreed to.
Oath of Enlistment (In front of US Flag and a commissioned officer you swear to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America, etc.)
Start Drilling one weekend a month with the RSP (Recruit Sustainment Program) We will help you prepare for Basic Training
Attend Basic Training and Advance Individual Training
Return home and attend drill with your unit one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer.
Do 20 years and receive retirement benefits when you turn 60 years old.
