The Army National Guard
The National Guard goes back more than 360 years- before there was a "United States of America." In the face of danger, the farmers, doctors and blacksmiths of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banded together to protect their families and property. The concept of the citizen-soldier was born. And ever since, citizen-soldiers have helped write the history of America.
They secured our independence in the Revolutionary War. Fought face-to-face at Gettysburg. Charged up San Juan Hill. Led the assault on D-Day. They even marched through the jungles of Vietnam and the sands of Desert Storm.
It's a proud heritage that includes the names of some of our finest heroes, Ethan Allen and John Hancock. It also includes 19 of our presidents, such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Harry S. Truman and George W. Bush.
Today, over 350,00 men and women continue the tradition of the citizen-soldier as members of the Army National Guard. Join them. Become part of the team that makes history.

Your Virginia Army National Guard is steeped in history and honor. From "Stonewall" Jackson and George Washington to Medal of Honor recipients Sergeants Earle Gregory and Frank Peregory.
The 29th Infantry Division was the first guard unit to include soldiers from both the North and South after the Civil War. Which is now represented on the "ying-yang" styled unit patch you may see on the shoulders of your neighbors.
